The Sustainable Communities Institute (SCI) at Virginia Commonwealth University addresses social, physical, environmental, and economic issues of sustainability through planning, research and community engagement. Its purpose is to expand knowledge on the building of better places. It uses insight from expertise in urban, suburban and revitalization planning to improve the understanding of policies and practices that effect community development. SCI provides community assistance in the form of land use concepts and plans as well as public education through accessible reports and public presentations.
