Summer Volunteer Opportunity . Project Esperanza is an exciting summer volunteer opportunity which primarily serves the Haitian immigrant population of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic in the areas of education, social aid, and community development (since 2006). VCU Summer 2012 Service-Learning in Arizona

VCUarts Cinema's spring semester Cinematheque has begun screening films on Tuesdays at 7PM. They are held at the VCU Grace Street Thtre and are FREE. Every Thursday the Sierra Club hosts an event where they eat free pizza and make phone calls to local senators and delegates about the Senate Bill 369 on transportation. Manna Project International is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to engaging young adults in holistic community development initiatives. LIVFund scholarship opportunity

General Internship courses require an override for registration, and you will need to make an appointment with the internship coordinator first. You can do so by calling the World Studies Office at 827-1111. If you're interested in ESL and language teaching, consider our New Communities Internship. This internship includes a lecture series on ESL Education, a research project, and placement as a Teaching Assistant in ESL classrooms in one of the Richmond area public schools. The course is set at 3 credits, and students may register online (INTL 493-004 / FRLG 493-004). The Syllabus will be distributed the first day of class. National Security Education Program - African Languages Initiative
This initiative seeks applicants who have had exposure to Bambara, Swahili, Yoruba, or Zulu, and can demonstrate proficiency of novice-high or above. Specifically, this pilot initiative will provide the opportunity for Fellows to enhance their Boren Fellowship with additional language study in the United States and overseas. Beginning Summer 2011, Fellows will have the opportunity to enroll in domestic university-based summer intensive courses in the targeted languages. The Summer U.S. programs will be followed by intensive language and culture study programs during the Fall semester at specific language centers in Mali (Bambara), Tanzania (Swahili), Nigeria (Yoruba), and South Africa (Zulu). Red Cross Volunteer Training Program
Paul Hundley, the Red Cross Disaster Services Manager here in Richmond, has a training program of 2 to 3 hours for which he would like to engage VCU students who wish to serve as Red Cross volunteers in emergencies, either on VCU campuses or in the community. Individuals cannot serve as a volunteer in a Red Cross involved activity unless they have received the Red Cross training program. New Communities Internship
The School of World Studies, in conjunction with the Richmond Public Schools, has designed an internship that allows VCU students to assist in ESL classes throughout the city K-12 schools. The internship begins with a lecture series that addresses topics important to ESL education, then places the student in one of the area classrooms as a Teaching Assistant. This internship is open for registration under INTL 493-004 or FRLG 490-004 (for Foreign Language majors and minors) for the fall.
