Latin Statue

In the history of the western world, one will find no more influential force than the Roman republic.  The vast empire established artistic, linguistic, cultural and political traditions that consistently influenced all western societies to come.  The language itself serves as a common basis for all western European languages.  The Roman literary, artistic and philosophical canons have greatly inspired western thought and continue to do so.  Understanding western literature and history depends on the study of the Latin language.

The question becomes why should one not study Latin?  Whether it is linguistic systems for the languages that we speak, persisting influence of Roman culture, or appreciation for Roman artistic ideals, the study of the Latin language provides knowledge of many forces that still shape the western world.
