Welcome | Why Study Russian? | Russian Minor | Courses | Faculty | Academic Advising | Resources

Though a new chapter of United States-Russian relations has begun, the Russian language still holds great influence in Europe as a spoken language of 278 million people, of which 164 million speak Russian as their native language.  Russia is a member of the Group of Eight (G8) and has political accords with the European Union.  As a member of the U.N. Security Council, Russia is one of the nations charged with the highest international missions of peacekeeping and legal sanctions.  The Russian language is a powerful diplomatic and political force.

The study of the Russian language now raises more appreciation and interest for major Russian literary figures, such as Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Anton Chekhov.  Dostoyevsky is a singular literary figure whose characters’ psychologically intimate reflections inspired literary thinking of the Modern period.  Tolstoy, a prominent figure of European realism, exemplified artistic ideals of the era.  Chekhov is often viewed as a father for the Modern literary period because he drives his narratives through his characters.  The Russian language and its literatures are a prominent agent of international government and human study. Immerse yourself in the immense tradition and beauty of the Great Russian Language.
