Many academic texts include notes.  Notes are generally used to include information that is important but not crucial to your general argument; in other words, information that does not affect your argument but is interesting for the reader to know.  Notes also provide space for references that might otherwise be so long that they would disturb the reader’s understanding of the text.  There are two kinds of notes: footnotes and endnotes. Generally, only one format is used in a single text.
