Make sure your list of references - your
bibliography - is accurate and complete in all respects. Even if you write a review of a single
book, you should mention it in a bibliography at the end of your
paper. Many journals have specific guidelines
for how references should be made – You should ask your professor
which style guidelines he/she prefers BEFORE drafting your bibliography. Such guidelines are usually published
regularly in specific academic journals and are often found on journal
websites. Even though almost every academic journal
has different guidelines, there are some very general rules for references
that you should always follow. Do not include any authors or works in
your bibliography to which you do not directly refer in the text. Make sure you include all works that
you have cited. If the
reference is incomplete for some reason, find the necessary information
and complete it. If
this is not possible, explain in the bibliography that the missing
piece of information is not available (for instance use "nd" for "no
date" or "ng" for "not given"). If an article you cite in your text is
part of a larger, edited volume, your must cite the specific author,
not the volume editor(s). The
complete information about the volume must be made in your bibliography. Similarly, if there are more than two
authors (Ruff, Trinkaus, Walker, and Lawson 1993:22), your specific
reference may be shortened (Ruff, et al. 1993:22), but the full citation
must be included in the bibliography.
Bibiliographic references are listed
in alphabetical order, references by the same author listed by year
with the earliest first. If
there are several references are by the same author in the same year,
they are alphabetized and distinguished by "a" and "b" after
the year (as well as in the in text citation). |
