Welcome to the School of World Studies Foreign Language website!
Language creates the forum for all communication. The structure of a language, developed over ages, supports and reflects its cultural values. To begin to understand another culture and its values, ideals and people is to first enter into a dialogue conducted in that language. The foreign language programs at VCU base language learning on practical knowledge, immersion and exposure to cultural media and materials so that they might illuminate for students the ways of thinking within a language. All students will be prepared for advanced study, career or travel from their new cultural perspectives and language abilities.
Fluency in world languages provides a powerful advantage to today’s college graduates. The impact of globalization and today’s increasingly complex geopolitical landscape has significantly heightened the need to produce linguistically and culturally competent college graduates, particularly in the less-commonly taught languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Portuguese.
