101 Course Content:

The following topics are presented in 101:

  • Meeting People: greetings and goodbyes, introducing oneself, expressions of courtesy
  • The University: the classroom, university life, classes, fields of study
  • The Family and friends: family relations, describing people, parties
  • Work:  Professions and careers, daily routines, clothing
  • Activities: travel, weather, seasons, invitations, holidays

 101 Course Objectives:

  • Understand classroom instructions from professor
  • Carry on a brief conversation (1-5 minutes) about any of the topics presented in French 101
  • Understand brief conversations (1-5 minutes), with some repetition, about familiar topics from French 101
  • Read brief texts (1-3 paragraphs) about familiar topics from French 101
  • Write brief compositions (1-3 paragraphs) about familiar topics from French 101, with the help of a dictionary

101 Course Expectations:

In order to meet these goals, students must:

  • Recognize all and master most of the vocabulary in chapters P - 5 of Points de départ (all the verb lists are considered active vocabulary as well)
  • Understand and recognize all the grammatical structures from chapters P - 5
  • Master usage and production of the following structures:

    Number and gender of nouns and adjectives
    Formation of the present tense: regular and irregular verbs
    Basic questions and negations
    Possessive, comparative and superlative adjectives
    Basics of être, avoir, aller, faire, devoir, vouloir, pouvoir
    Subject, reflexive and emphatic pronouns
    Passé composé
    Pronominal verbs
    Numbering systems, time
