101 Course Content:

Required text: Deutsch Na Klar

The following topics are presented in 101:

  • Meeting People: greetings and goodbyes, introducing oneself, expressions of courtesy
  • Talking about yourself and others
  • The University and school:classes, fields of study
  • The Family: family relations, describing people, professions
  • Recreation: pastimes, going out, places in the city
  • Shopping: clothing, colors, choosing items, paying
  • At a restaurant: foods, reading the menu, ordering, paying
  • Looking for a place to live
  • Calendar, telling time, holidays, daily schedule

 101 Course Objectives:

  • Understand classroom instructions from professor
  • Carry on a brief conversation (1-5 minutes) about any of the topics presented in German 101
  • Understand brief conversations (1-5 minutes), with some repetition, about familiar topics from German 101
  • Read brief texts (1-3 paragraphs) about familiar topics from German 101
  • Write brief compositions (1-3 paragraphs) about familiar topics from German 101, with the help of a dictionary

101 Course Expectations:

In order to meet these goals, students must:

  • Recognize all and master most of the vocabulary in chapters 1-6 of Deutsch Na Klar
  • Understand and recognize all the grammatical structures from chapters 1-6
  • Master usage and production of the following structures:

    Number, gender, and plurals of nouns
    Formation of the present tense: regular, vowel-change, modals, separable prefix
    Irregular verbs: sein, haben, werden, wissen
    Word order in statements and questions
    Personal pronouns and possessive adjectives
    Nominative, accusative, dative: cases, uses, articles
    Command forms
    Prepositions: dative (aus, bei,…), accusative (durch, für,…), two-way (an, auf…)
