102 Course Content:

Required text: Deutsch Na Klar, Graded German Reader

The following topics are presented in 102:

  • Sports and hobbies
  • Seasons and the weather
  • Health: health care, the body, illnesses
  • Jobs and professions & finding a position
  • The home: parts of the house, finding a place to live
  • Daily routines and chores, personal hygiene
  • Traveling: modes of transportation, buying a ticket, at the travel agency
  • Finances: saving, spending, budgeting, banking

 102 Course Objectives:

  • Understand classroom instructions from professor
  • Carry on a brief conversation (2-6 minutes) about any of the topics presented in German 101-102
  • Understand brief conversations (2-6 minutes), with some repetition, about familiar topics from German 101-102
  • Read and understand brief simplified texts in German
  • Write brief compositions (1page) about familiar topics from German 101-102, with the help of a dictionary

102 Course Expectations:

In order to meet these goals, students must:

  • Recognize all and master most of the vocabulary in chapters 7-12 of Deutsch Na Klar
  • Understand and recognize all the grammatical structures from chapters 7-12
  • Master usage and production of the following grammatical concepts:

    Coordinating (aber, und,…) and subordinating (dass, weil, …) conjunctions
    Reflexive pronouns and verbs (sich rasieren)
    Comparisons and superlatives (schön, schöner, am schönsten)
    Formation/use of the simple past (ich sagte) & perfect (ich habe gesagt) tenses
    The genitive case (das Auto des Mannes)
    Adjective endings
    Relative pronouns (…der Mann, den ich gesehen habe)
    Verb-preposition combinations (warten auf, lachen über, …) & da-/wo-
    compounds
    Subjunctive forms and use for hypothetical situations, wishes05/19/2009
