Degree requirements – Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages with a concentration in Spanish
The degree program requires a minimum of 120 credits, with at least 31 of those credits in upper-level courses in Spanish, and fulfillment of the general education requirements of the College of Humanities and Sciences for the Bachelor of Arts degree.
Foreign language students in Spanish are required to take SPAN 300 and SPAN 301. Students must also complete an additional 15 credits of 300-level course work in Spanish; these credits must include a conversation course (305 or 311), a civilization course (320 or 321), and a survey of literature course (330 or 331). Students then select 9 credits of course work in Spanish at the 400- or 500-level. To complete the major, students must take SPAN 495, the 1-credit portfolio seminar; exemptions are made on a case-by-case basis. SPAN 495 cannot be counted towards the other 9 credits of course work in Spanish at the 400- or 500-level.
In addition, students have two collateral degree requirements: students must complete a World Passport, to be reviewed by the advisor, and students must also complete an experiential learning requirement through an approved internship, service-learning course, independent study, study-abroad program or other means as approved by the advisor.
Transfer students who intend to major in Spanish must take a minimum of two 400- or 500-level courses in Spanish at VCU. Both credit and distribution requirements for the major must be satisfied.
