Latin Foreign Language Academy

The Governor's Latin Academy provides Virginia's top Latin students with the opportunity to expand and enrich their knowledge of the languages, histories, and cultures of ancient Rome and Greece. In the mornings, students take classes on various topics including ancient history, ancient art and architecture, Latin literature, Latin composition, and even ancient Greek. A number of activities fill up the afternoons and evenings, including gym time, pool time, and play practice for a Roman comedy (performed all in Latin).

Why should students study Latin? Latin students consistently outperform all other students in the SAT. Learning Latin enriches students' understanding of English vocabulary and grammar. The study of Greek and Latin helps to improve students' logic and analytic skills. Classical Studies students learn about the art, architecture, literature, philosophy, and government that serve as the foundation for much of Western civilization today.
