Frequently Asked Questions

Applying for an Internship

Q:  Am I eligible for an internship?
A:  Any student with a major or minor in the School of World Studies who has completed at least 6 credits at the 300 level or above in that major/minor is eligible for an internship.  However, specific internship, such as those for the SPAN 494 course, may have additional eligibility requirements.  Please see the General Course Requirements page for additional information.

Q:  How do I apply for an internship?
A:  You must make an appointment to meet with the Internship Coordinator, and bring a completed Application with you.  You can make an appointment by calling 827-1111.

Q:  How do I find an internship placement?
A:  The Internship Coordinator can assist you in identifying appropriate agencies given your particular academic and career interests.  However, you, the student, are ultimately responsible for securing an internship placement.  The Internship Listings can help you begin your search.  Feel free to contact any agencies of interest to you to ask about openings and application requirements.  You are also welcome to find an opportunity outside of the ones listed; however, any placements must be approved by the Internship Coordinator in order to receive academic credit.

Q:  When is the application deadline?
A:  Check the 08-09 Deadlines to determine the application deadline for the current semester.

Internship Course Requirements

Q:  How do I register for the course?
A:  After you meet with the Internship Coordinator and find a placement, you’ll need to have your supervisor sign the Internship Contract.  When you return the Contract to the Internship Coordinator, you’ll receive an override to register for the course.

Q:  How many hours are involved in an internship?
A:  Students may apply from 1-6 credits of internship towards their World Studies major or minor.  Internships require 40 logged hours of work per credit, with 10% being allotted for completion of the journal and final paper.

Q:  What are the course requirements for the internship?
A:  The general requirements include keeping a log of hours worked (signed weekly by the supervisor), keeping a weekly journal concurrent with the internship, submitting copies of the log and journal twice during the semester, writing a final report, putting together the final portfolio and having your supervisor complete an Evaluation of your work by the final deadline.  Specific internships have additional requirements; please see the General Course Requirements page for further information.

Q:  What if I am unable to complete the required number of hours within the semester?
A:  Unless otherwise stated, internships run through one semester and all course requirements must be completed within that semester.  However, if a student is unable to complete the course requirements by the semester deadline, alternative arrangements can be made.  You must contact the Internship Coordinator at least 3 weeks before the end of the semester.
