Applying for an Internship
Q: Am I eligible for an internship?
A: Any student with a major or minor in the School of World Studies who has completed at least 6 credits at the 300 level or above in the major/minor courses is eligible for an internship. However, the specialty internships may have additional eligibility requirements. Please see Types of Internships for additional information.
Q: How do I apply for an internship?
A: You must make an appointment to meet with the Internship Coordinator, complete the Application and Contract, and submit the paperwork by the Application Deadline to receive credit for an internship. Late applications will NOT be approved. You can make an appointment by calling 827-1111.
Q: How do I find an internship placement?
A: The Internship Coordinator can assist you in identifying appropriate agencies given your particular academic and career interests. However, you, the student, are ultimately responsible for securing an internship placement. The Internship Listings can help you begin your search. Feel free to contact any agencies of interest to you to ask about openings and application requirements. You are also welcome to find an opportunity outside of the ones listed; however, all placements must be approved by the Internship Coordinator in order to receive academic credit.
Q: When is the application deadline?
A: Check Deadlines to determine the application deadline for the current semester.
Course Requirements
Q: How do I register for the course?
A: After you meet with the Internship Coordinator and find a placement, you’ll need to have your supervisor complete the Internship Contract. When you return the Application and Contract to the Internship Coordinator, you’ll receive an override to register for the appropriate internship course. You will take the override form to Founders Hall to finalize the registration.
Q: How many hours are involved in an internship?
A: For General Internships, students may apply from 1-6 credits of internship towards their World Studies major or minor. Specialty Internships may have limitations on the number of credits earned. Internships require 40 logged hours of work per credit. Please see Types of Internships for complete details.
Q: What are the course requirements for the internship?
A: The general requirements include keeping a log of hours worked (signed weekly by the supervisor), keeping a weekly journal concurrent with the internship, submitting copies of the log and journal twice during the semester, writing a final report, putting together the final portfolio and having your supervisor complete an Evaluation of your work by the final deadline. Each type of Internship has specific course requirements. Please see Types of Internships for complete details.
Q: What if I am unable to complete the required number of hours within the semester?
A: Unless otherwise stated, internships run through one semester and all course requirements must be completed within that semester. However, if a student is unable to complete the course requirements by the semester deadline, alternative arrangements can be made. You must contact the Internship Coordinator at least 3 weeks before the end of the semester.
