World Studies Community Scholars

For the exceptional student who wishes to get beyond the classroom to apply program content and gain field experience, we offer the opportunity to become a World Studies Community Scholar.

Qualifying majors and minors in the School are encouraged to pursue special recognition as a World Studies Community Scholar by satisfying the following criteria:

  • Successfully completing all four sections of the World Passport, earning a total of 100 or more points.
  • Maintaining an overall GPA of 3.0
  • Receiving recommendation by at least one World Studies faculty member.

The Experiential Learning option of the World Passport may be completed through an approved

All Experiential Learning opportunities must receive prior approval from the SWS Advising Office.

Study Abroad
Founded in the belief that an international and multicultural perspective is increasingly necessary for all university students, Virginia Commonwealth University encourages students from all majors and fields of interest to receive a part of their education in an international environment. VCU Summer study-abroad programs provide students with opportunities for short-term immersion in the language, culture and civilization of the countries they visit. Internship
Students have the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a professional setting through an approved credit-bearing local, national or international internship.

Service-Learning Course
Service-learning at VCU is a course-based, credit-bearing educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets community-identified needs. This collaborative teaching and learning strategy is designed to promote and encourage course content, personal growth and civic engagement. Typically, a service-learning course requires a minimum of 15 hours of service with selected nonprofit and community-based organizations or schools.
