I am Haishan Lai. I live in Richmond Virginia. I was born in China. I received my first degree in China 1985. It is a Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese Language and Literature. I have taught Chinese language at VCU for nine years. I came to America with my son in 1994 when my husband was studying for his PhD at Virginia Commonwealth University. Before my husband graduated from his program, I have been thinking about what I was going to do in United State for five years. My husband graduated and got his PhD in 1997. My daughter was born that summer. When my daughter was two years old, I started to try to do different jobs. In 1999, one of my friends suggested me to be a substitute teacher for public schools, so I did and I found out that I love teaching very much. Therefore, I went to college to study English in year 2000 at VCU, a year later, the Department of Art Education accepted me and I started to study for Bachelor degree. I finished all courses 2005 and I got my diploma.
At the time I started studying, I obtained a job at VCU to teach Chinese. During this time of teaching, I found out that the more I taught the more I had a desire to learn about instructional methods. I then started to study for my master degree of education. After I accomplished the program, I obtained master degree of art in education in 2007. After that, I gradually used the knowledge I learned to help students’ learning. This learning experience helped me to improve my teaching skills and helped my students to learn better. Now I love my teaching job even more. I hope all my students enjoy Chinese language learning in my class.
