Alex Steenhuyse is an archaeologist whose research interests include Old
World archaeology, the origins of modern humans in Europe, stone tool
analysis and the use of geographical information in archaeology. He did his
graduate studies at the Sorbonne, Paris and the University of Pennsylvania.
Since 1992, he has worked on many different research projects in his native
France and in the United States giving him broad field experience. He is
currently working on documenting and explaining the relationship between
Neandertals and anatomically modern humans, in Western Europe, 40,000 years ago. This research includes excavating a Paleolithic site, which will
provide field school opportunities for students in the future. He joined the
Anthropology program at the School of World Studies in 2006.
