Barbara Wallace was born in New York and studied Spanish, French and German in high school. She worked at an animal hospital for many years, and bred and exhibited champion collies. On a whim, at the age of 39 she took an adult education class in Italian which changed her life. She enrolled at VCU for 3 semesters and made her first trip to Italy in the summer of 1996 with the VCU Study Abroad program in Perugia. She then transferred to the University of Virginia to pursue her passion for Italian language and culture, earning a BA with highest honors in 1999, and an MA in 2001. Since then, she has been an adjunct instructor of Italian at VCU, the University of Richmond, and UVA. She now accompanies groups of students to Perugia and has also served as Program Director for UVA’s intensive Summer Language Institute.
