We spent two days in Salzburg and arrived in heavy rain but made our way to the Vier Jahreszeiten Hotel, near the Mirabell Gardens, which we visited on the way to the pedestrian zone and the popular Getreidegasse.
From the city there are wonderful views of the fortress, Hohensalzburg, which dominates the city.
But we weren't satisfied with just the view from afar, but hiked up to the top of the fortress, which offers wonderful views of Salzburg and the surrounding mountains.
We didn't take the Sound of Music tour, but we did hit the salt mines, taking the train to Hallein and then the bus to the salt mine. In the salt mine, we crossed back over from Austria to Germany and then back to Austria. When we returned to Hallein, Suzan Arrer was nice enough to invite us over to her house for cake and coffee.
