Social Justice in a Global Perspective

 

   

Addressing issues of social justice, human rights and the moral and ethical dimensions of our increasingly globalized world shape the spirit of the School of World Studies , and form an important thread woven into our teaching, research and service.

Students in World Studies programs have a variety of opportunities to explore topics of social justice:

International Social Justice Studies Major

Students who select this concentration in the International Studies program combine courses across the curriculum with a social justice focus. Courses recently developed and offered include:

Human Rights Film Series Spring 06

Over 400 students attended screenings and discussions of four recent films with compelling themes put a human face to stories of suffering and activism in different parts of the world. This program is co-sponsored with the VCU Honors Program, the Office for International Education, and the School of Social Work.

Undergraduate Certificate in International Social Justice Studies.

World Studies faculty Saba Abed, Pat Cummins, Paul Dvorak, Gina Kovarsky, Angelina Overvold, Christina Turner, and Mark Wood collaborate with the VCU School of Social Work and local agencies to develop an undergraduate certificate in international social justice studies, including team-taught courses in social justice and human rights, with support of a 3-year US Department of Education Title VI grant ($145,231 directed by McKenna Brown and Humberto Fabelo.
