Advanced Language Lab Applications I

The Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI)

During this workshop we will work through one of the most efficient and valued uses of the software-based language lab, the simulated oral proficiency interview also known as SOPI.

The acronym SOPI is used by the US government, American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL). SOPI is a performance-based oral proficiency interview in a digital format for the purpose of measuring and assessing speaking proficiency in a foreign language.

Sanako Lab 300 provides intuitive and highly flexible tools that allow language instructors to capture their students voices individually in one interview session. In other words, the interview takes place once, but the result is a collection of each student's individual voice recording, which can then be burned on to CD for evaluation, assessment.

No other oral proficiency format is as quick, efficient, thorough, and accessible as the digital SOPI. Sanako Lab 300 allows teachers a wide range of tools to configure the interview and capture the voice recordings.
