2006 FALL TEACHERS WORKSHOP ON CHINA
September 30 – October 1, 2006 (Tentative Workshop Schedule)

As China experiences rapid growth, its presence is felt increasingly in the United States and around the globe. Building relationships with China requires a deeper understanding of its people, society and culture. In conjunction with the 2nd China-America Festival of Film and Culture in Richmond, the School of World Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) are pleased to organize this workshop.

On the first day, teachers will participate in film screening and discussions related to the contemporary life and culture in China. On the second day, they will gather at VCU for classroom sessions to gain a historical perspective on China's involvement in world affairs in modern times, and an understanding how such involvement may be informed by traditional world views and how China's recent economic transition has allowed for its further integration into the global system. The workshop content is designed to be relevant to Virginia's Standards of Learning. This exciting program has been made possible by generous support from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and National Committee on United States-China Relations.

Who May Attend? Virginia educators of all grade levels and subject areas are invited. Because space is limited to 40 teachers, participant selection is based on statement of purpose and geographic distribution. Applicants will receive notice of acceptance by September 5 and must confirm enrollment by September 15.

Registration/Optional Graduate Credit. There is NO fee for registration and teacher recertification. At the tuition rate of about $170, one graduate credit in international studies will be available through VCU. An additional assignment will be required of the credit-seeking participants. This will be in the form of a short research paper to answer a significant question about China's experience in external affairs or economic transition. Application for academic credit must be completed separately. A modest stipend to cover some travel expenses and academic tuition will be offered to qualified participants (exact amount depending on the number of such participants). All details will be sent with the notice of acceptance. We encourage teachers to seek financial assistance from home schools/districts.
