Welcome to the Department of Women’s Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. We offer a Bachelors of Arts and an undergraduate minor. There are two track options for majors; General Interdisciplinary Concentration and Women, Health and Science Focused Interdisciplinary Concentration. Students might consider a double major in another discipline. The Women's Studies BA requires 30 credits, just 12 credits (or four courses) more than a minor with no additional General Education requirements (see requirements).
Our programs are designed to provide students with a solid academic base for graduate studies and the credentials necessary for careers in the private or non-profit sector. Our discipline draws upon the theories, skills, pedagogy and perspectives of the humanities, social/behavioral sciences, life/physical sciences, and the arts. Scholars of Women’s Studies examine the complexity and diversity of a society in which gender ane sex defines our social experience, with a focus on the interplay between historical, political, economic, cultural, and social dynamics that shape the realities of both men and women.
Women's Studies is located on the north side of campus on historic W. Franklin Street and our offices are open Monday through Friday during regular business hours. Please contact us for an appointment or to arrange a campus visit.
