Undergraduate Major and Minor

There are two track options for majors; General Interdisciplinary Concentration and Women, Health and Science Focused Interdisciplinary Concentration.

Students might consider a combining a B.A. in Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies with a major in another discipline. The GSWS B.A. requires 30 credits, just 12 credits (or four courses) more than a minor with no additional General Education requirements (see requirements). For advising information about the undergraduate major or minor, please contact Liz Canfield, ercanfield@vcu.edu.

Our programs are designed to provide students with a solid academic base for graduate studies and the credentials necessary for careers in the private or non-profit sector. Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies draws upon the theories, skills, pedagogy and perspectives of the humanities, social/behavioral sciences, life/physical sciences, and the arts.

Graduate Certificate

The 15-credit hour Graduate Certificate is an excellent adjunct to a master's or doctoral degree in the social sciences, humanities and the professions. The Certificate is designed to immerse graduate students in the history, philosophy and theoretical framework of feminisms. Our objectives are to contribute to the intellectual growth of our students in areas of study that are rarely found in other disciplines, and to broaden personal and intellectual perspectives to the changing landscapes of gender and sexuality.

The Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies (GSWS)  is located on the north side of campus in the historic Crenshaw Building, 919 W. Franklin Street, first floor. Our offices are open Monday through Friday during regular business hours. Please contact us for an appointment or to arrange a campus visit. For advising information about the Graduate Certificate please contact Janet Hutchinson, jhutch@vcu.edu.
