 Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies

Degree Requirements and Semester Sequence

A Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies has been approved and replaces the BIS major track in Women’s Studies effective spring 2007. You may choose from two concentrations in the new BA: General Interdisciplinary Concentration (similar to the BIS major, but with one additional requirement) and Women, Health and Science Focused Interdisciplinary Concentration.

Students may want to consider a double major combining a BA in Women’s Studies with a major in another discipline. The Women’s Studies BA requires 30 credits, just 12 credits or four courses more than a minor.

A Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies requires a total of 120 credits with 30 credits in Women's Studies courses and at least 15 of these credits in upper level courses. Students may choose from a General Interdisciplinary Concentration or a Women, Health and Science Focused Interdisciplinary Concentration. Students in the General Interdisciplinary Concentration must complete the General Education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in the College of Humanities and Sciences. Students in the Women, Health and Science Focused Interdisciplinary Concentration must complete the General Education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in the College of Humanities and Sciences, STAT 210 an additional 3 credits (for a total of 10 credits) in a natural science are required.  Women's Studies credits shall be distributed as follows:

General Interdisciplinary Concentration
Students in the General Interdisciplinary Concentration must complete the General Education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in the College of Humanities and Sciences. Additionally, students must take either WMNS 301, Feminist Social Theory, or WMNS 352/ENGL 352, Feminist Literary Theory, in addition to 3 credits for a total of 12 from each of the following areas: Diversity/International Perspectives on Women, Humanities Perspectives on Women, Social Science Perspectives on Women and Women, Health and Science. A course listed in two different areas may not be used to fulfill both requirements for the major. The remainder of 30 credits in women’s studies are electives but must be in women’s studies courses or courses cross-listed with women’s studies. Electives may include WMNS 391, Special Topics and WMNS 492, Independent Study.

Women, Health and Science Focused Interdisciplinary Concentration
Students in the Women, Health and Science Focused Interdisciplinary Concentration must complete the General Education requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in the College of Humanities and Sciences, STAT 210 an additional 3 credits (for a total of 10 credits) in a natural science are required. Additionally, students must take WMNS 301, Feminist Social Theory, and WMNS 393, Feminist Research and Methods, in addition to 12 credits as follows: 3 credits from Diversity/International Perspectives on Women and 9 credits from Women, Health and Science. A course listed in two different areas may not be used to fulfill both requirements for the major. The remainder of 30 credits in women’s studies are electives but must be in women’s studies courses or courses cross-listed with women’s studies. Electives may include WMNS 391, Special Topics and WMNS 492, Independent Study.
